Medium-sized evergreen trees.
Leaves alternate, thinly coriaceous, entire, oblong to elliptic, 9–11 cm long, 3.3–4 cm broad, short acute at apex, acute to obtuse at base, attenuate toward petioles, polished and glabrous above, dull and glabrous below, midrib and veins somewhat elevated above. distinctly elevated below, lateral veins 9–13 pairs, arising at an angle of 60° from the midrib; petioles 1.5–2 cm long, narrowly winged at apex, thickened at base.
Inflorescence catkins or spikes, unisexual, simple or mixed; staminate flowers 3.5 mm long, 2 mm broad, pubescent outside; perianth 6-lobed; stamens 12, anthers 0.3 mm long, 2-celled, longitudinally dehiscent. Pistillate spikes 7 cm long, robust; pistillate flowers 3, aggregately clustered, 2.5 mm long, 2.5 mm broad; ovary 3-celled, styles 3, stigma pointed.
Cupules dish-shaped, 5–7 mm long, 15–17 mm across; scales mostly imbricate on upper to median parts of cupules, arranged in many series, broadly triangular in shape, cuspidate at apex, 2 mm broad, slightly appressed-tomentose outside, thinly appressed-pubescent inside, often with 2–4 concen-tric rings of scales on lower part of cupule; scar of nut on cupule 8 mm across, elevated.Nuts strongly compressed-globose, 12–13 mm long, 1.8–2 cm across.

fruit maturing from October to November.

台灣 : very rare although widely distributed, in forests at altitudes of 700–2,500 m at Paling (Taoyuen), Alishan (Chiayi), Tayulin, Lishan (Taichung), Alikung (Kaohsiung), and Tapushan, Chihpen (Taitung).
世界 : Distributed in S China.
